The “Temperance Barn,” so-named because the barn-raising was accomplished without the rum that was usually supplied on such occasions, has stood at the Peabody-Fitch Farm (Bridgton Historical Society’s “Narramissic,”) since George Fitch constructed it in 1830. Expertly restored by Bob Dunning in the years following the Society’s acquisition of the property in 1987, it stands now in need of a new roof.
The barn is not only an important part of this remarkably intact, 19th-century farmstead listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but it is used extensively by the Society for special events like the annual Woodworkers and Artisans Show in July and the Harvest Festival in the fall.
Your generous donation will help us to preserve the barn and all the traditions it represents for future generations to enjoy and learn from. Thank you!

UPDATE: Thanks to Bob Wiser Construction of Bridgton, the roof has been replaced at a cost of $27,776, more than $5,000 under the original $33,000 budget. But the project is not done, since we still have to pay back the balance.
