On Saturday, September 19, the Bridgton Historical Society will host a Harvest Supper and Festival at Narramissic, the Society’s historic farmstead in South Bridgton. The fun will start at 3:00 pm with old-time games and family activities, tours of the house and blacksmith's shop, and traditional style music. Herbalist Mary Doughty will be available to explain the herbs found at Narramissic and their traditional uses. A traditional harvest supper will be served, starting at 5:00 pm. The emphasis this year is on local foods--hand-raised turkeys, local vegetables, and fruits for the homemade pies. Admission, which includes all activities and food, is $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for children under 12 (6 and under free).
Narramissic is located on Ingalls Road, off route 107 in South Bridgton. It includes an historic farmhouse built in 1797, presented much as it was on the eve of the Civil War, the “Temperance Barn” (so-named because it was raised without supplying rum to the participants, as was traditional in those days), and a restored, functioning blacksmith shop, all set on approximately 25 acres of land with dramatic views of western Maine and the White Mountains. The house is open for tours on a regular schedule during the summer, and tours may be arranged by appointment during the fall. The public is also invited to enjoy the grounds any time during daylight hours. The Society also operates a museum and research facility at 5 Gibbs Avenue in downtown Bridgton.
